Human trafficking is a crime that happens in plain sight and affects approximately 27.6 million individuals worldwide. It is estimated that up to 88% of individuals had come into contact with a healthcare provider at some time during their time being trafficked. Patients who are being trafficked come through all areas of the healthcare system, not only the Emergency Department. It is crucial that healthcare providers become educated about human trafficking.
Our featured speaker will be Debra Holbrook, recipient of the 2022 Presidential Award for Extraordinary Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons. This opportunity will introduce healthcare providers to the basics of human trafficking, discuss the complexities of patients who are trafficked, and how to safely respond if there is a suspicion of trafficking.
