“Trauma and Kids: The What, The Why, and What’s Next”
This training is intended for professionals and volunteers who work with youth and families in the legal system.
Learning Objectives:
- What behaviors, beliefs, and inner emotional experiences might be present after a child has experienced trauma
- What treatment options are there for children who have experienced trauma
- What are principles of trauma informed care - what can various professionals do to help along the way and what should be avoided
- What is the perspective of mental health care providers within the system (how we work with families, what we aim for in therapy, and requests that can hinder therapeutic relationships)
This training will be offered twice, once in Seattle and once at the Maleng Regional Justice Center. The training in Seattle will be broadcast internally via video conference to the YSC in Seattle in room 308 on the 3rd floor.

Amie Shipley, LMFT, CMHS
Amie Shipley is a Child and Family Therapist with 6 years of experience working with children and families to improve mental health and overall wellbeing. She works primarily with clients who struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges related to depression, anxiety, and traumatic events. She works with children of all ages but particularly enjoys working with teenagers teaching them to increase emotional awareness and attend effectively to distress though Dialectical Behavioral Therapy individually and in groups. It is a particular passion to assist clients in working through trauma symptoms by accessing their own strengths and resiliency as they complete therapy work in a variety of trauma focused modalities.
