Description: This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, please join us for a reflection on the impact Survivors FIRST has made in our local community of survivor-defendants AND in the national movement for survivors justice. Since launch in 2019, Survivors FIRST has diverted 800 survivors of gender-based violence – predominantly African American women and women of color – facing criminal charges that stem from being a survivor away from the criminal justice system. During that timeframe, this innovative model has expanded to Nashville and Portland. By stabilizing women who are survivor defendants without the need for prison, Survivors FIRST is helping counteract the rate of incarcerated women in Washington, which has increased in recent years. This event will be an opportunity to learn about the positive change Survivors FIRST has made in King County, who has been served, and where the work is going next.
