Webinar: OnlyFans and the Growth of Online Exploitation during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Webinar: OnlyFans and the Growth of Online Exploitation during the COVID-19 Pandemic

When: Thursday, May 13 at from 9 to 10 AM

Hosted by: World Without Exploitation

Overview: The content subscription platform OnlyFans is quickly becoming one of the most popular new websites especially for students and young people during the pandemic. With more and more young people out of work and struggling to make ends meet, more will turn to sites like OnlyFans out of desperation. The site boasts access to quick funds as an empowering way to make money during these challenging times. However, OnlyFans poses unique dangers and threats to online and offline safety. Research in the UK commissioned by the BBC found that on a single day, a third of Twitter profiles globally advertising ‘nudes4sale’ (or similar) appeared to belong to an underage individual and many of those used OnlyFans to share their content. COVID-19 has also caused third party exploiters to turn their focus to online platforms. There are examples of traffickers convincing young people to give over control of all social media profiles including their OnlyFans account. The result is a loss of control and the victim ends up on pornography sites and others places without their consent. During our monthly webinar we will hear from experts who will discuss the links between OnlyFans, cyber sexual abuse, and the commercial sex trade and how this form of exploitation has grown during the pandemic.
