The year 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. In recognition of this significant milestone, the U.S. Department of Education is conducting a webinar series to address the growing response of America’s schools to child trafficking. The event, the second of four webinars, will feature anti-trafficking strategies at the state, district, and school level to prevent human trafficking and child labor exploitation.
The event is designed to provide building-level administrators, teachers, and specialized instructional support personnel with strategies, rooted in trauma-informed and survivor-centered approaches, for preventing students from falling prey to trafficking activity.
The webinar will feature a variety of perspectives:
· Katherine Chon, Director of the Office on Trafficking in Persons at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide a national perspective on the essential role of Universal Prevention in addressing human trafficking;
· Ruth Ryder, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education will describe the importance of Human Trafficking prevention in the nation’s education system;
· Michelle Gaines, Federal Program Bureau Chief, Florida Department of Education will describe that state’s approach to human trafficking prevention;
· Mara Madrigal-Weiss, Director, Student Wellness and Positive School Climate, San Diego County Office of Education will discuss specific strategies in place to prevent human trafficking throughout San Diego County;
· Bella Hounakey, U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking will share a survivor-driven perspective on the importance of preventive measures in human trafficking and child labor exploitation; and
